(November 4, 2013) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team defeated Canada 2-0 to win Group B at the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship in Jamaica. The victory sets up an all-important clash with Mexico in the semifinal on Nov. 7, with the winner earning a spot in the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Forwards Zoe Redei and Mallory Pugh scored goals in the 36th and 62nd minutes, respectively, as head coach B.J. Snow’s team earned its third straight victory at the Montego Bay Sports Complex with an excellent overall performance against its regional rival.

In the other semifinal, Jamaica will take on Canada in front of a large home crowed at 6 p.m. ET. The winner of that semifinal will earn the second of CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup being held next March in Costa Rica.

The U-17s went into the game knowing that only a win would give them first place in Group B as Canada had an advantage in goal difference, and the Americans started the match on the front foot. Snow’s team generated the first real chance of a wide-open first half when Redei combined with forward Mallory Pugh in the 16th minute. Redei cut inside her marker on the edge of the box but Canada goalkeeper Rylee Foster was equal to the shot.

Pugh came close to providing the U.S. a lead in the 34th minute, following up a lofted free kick with a sizzling half-volley from the edge of the area. Foster made a fantastic save, diving to her left to just push the ball around her post.

Two minutes later, the USA finally gained the lead when right back Ellie Jean drove forward into the box and did well to poke the ball square to Redei. The in-form U.S. forward stabbed it home with the outside of her right foot to give the USA a lead heading into the break. The goal was Redei’s team-leading fifth of the tournament and marked her second-consecutive game on the score sheet.

The USA continued the positive play in the second half, with Dorian Bailey nearly doubling the lead in the 53rd minute. The midfielder cracked a shot from 20 yards that dipped fiercely past Foster before bouncing back off the inside of the left post and away.

The USA would not be denied, however, with goal scorer Redei turning provider in the 62nd minute. Latching onto a long ball over the top, Redei outpaced the defense into the right side of the penalty area before expertly squaring to Pugh who calmly rolled the ball home into an empty net. The goal was Pugh’s third of the tournament and ninth in just seven U-17 international matches.

The USA had a chance to add to its lead late in the game when Pugh was dragged down in the box by Canada defender Mika Richards in the 81st minute. After a lengthy stoppage for Richards, who remained down with an injury and left the field on a stretcher, midfielder Marley Canales stepped up to take the penalty kick a full seven minutes after the initial foul.

Richards was shown a yellow card for the foul, and as Canada had used all its substitutes, it had to play the remainder of the match with 10 players.

Canales went to Foster’s left with her penalty kick attempt, but the Canada goalkeeper reacted superbly to keep the ball out and did just as well to save the follow up, turning away a blast off the rebound from Bailey.

The USA qualified for its first U-17 Women’s World Cup back in 2008 by defeating Mexico in the semifinal, 1-0, on a goal from current U.S. Women’s National Team player Crystal Dunn.

  • B.J. Snow made six changes to the lineup that defeated Guatemala 8-0 on Saturday, reverting to a starting XI similar to the one that opened the tournament against Trinidad & Tobago last Thursday.
  • The USA has out-scored its opposition 17-0 in the first round of the tournament.
  • Snow went with a 4-3-3 formation that featured a front line of Kelcie Hedge, Zoe Redei and Mallory Pugh.
  • Snow used three subs, all in the second half. Taylor Racioppi replaced Anika Rodriguez in the 60th minute, Mia Gyau replaced Redei in the 78 th and Maddy Schultz entered for Pugh in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
  • Ellie Jean’s assist was her first point of the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship. Jean captained the USA on the night.
  • Zoe Redei’s assist was her first of the tournament.
  • Natalie Jacbos is the only U.S. player to play all 270 minutes of the tournament so far.
  • The age cut-off for the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is players born on or after Jan. 1, 1997. Twelve of the 20 players on the roster were born in 1997, six were born in 1998 and two in 1999.

(November 2, 2013) – ’96 ECNL Striker Kelcie Hedge Plus three different goal scorers helped the U.S. tie Canada on points in group play and set up a titanic clash between the two teams that will decide the winner of Group B on Monday night.

The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team recorded its second straight lopsided victory at the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship, routing Guatemala by a 7-0 score in rainy conditions at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Forward Zoe Redei made an impressive U-17 WNT debut, scoring the USA’s first four goals. Midfielder Dorian Bailey and defender Gabriella Carreiro converted penalty kicks late in the game while forward Kelcie Hedge added a goal in second-half stoppage time.

With the victory, the U.S. clinched first or second in Group B and a spot in the semifinals. In the other Group B match, Canada defeated Trinidad & Tobago 11-0, putting Canada atop Group B on goal differential. The results means the USA needs to defeat Canada in its final first round match on Monday, Nov. 4 to win the group.

The top two finishers in each group will cross over with the first-place team in Group A playing second in Group B and vice-versa. The semifinal winners on Thursday, Nov. 7, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup being held next March in Costa Rica.

The USA-Canada game can be seen live on FOX Soccer Plus and online at FOX Soccer 2GO at 6 p.m. ET. Fans can also follow on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker and on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt.

U.S. head coach B.J. Snow made eight changes to the starting lineup that opened the tournament with an 8-0 victory against Trinidad & Tobago on Oct. 31 and the USA now has 11 different goal scorers in the competition, meaning more than half the roster has gotten on the score sheet.

Like against Trinidad & Tobago in the USA’s opening match, the young Americans started a bit tentatively, and Guatemala packed its defensive third with players for the entire match, giving the Americans little space in the attacking third. Guatemala did launch several dangerous looking counter-attacks early on, but center-backs Taylor Otto and Natalie Jacobs ran everything down.

After the USA settled into the game a bit, Redei opened the scoring in the 21st minute and would later become the first U.S. Women’s National Team player to score four times in her first cap. The goal came off a great individual effort after she received the ball from 14-year-old Frankie Tagliaferri on the left sideline. Redei sped past two Guatemala defenders, cut the ball inside to her right foot and shot from just outside the box, powering her low drive just inside the left post past a diving Guatemala goalkeeper Angie Hidalgo.

In the 32nd minute, a miscommunication between a defender and Hidalgo led to Redei’s second tally. Hidalgo took a poor goal kick, the ball was played back toward her, but Redei intercepted as the goalkeeper plowed over her own defender and the U.S. striker finished into the open net for the 2-0 lead.

Redei completed her hat trick in the 36th minute when a corner kick from the left bounced off Otto in the middle of the box. The deflected the ball toward Redei, who had her back to the goal with Guatemala’s Isabella Salas loosely defending her. Redei brought the ball to her left to elude Salas and fired a shot into left side of the net take make the lead 3-0 heading into halftime.

Early in the second half, Redei scored her fourth after Hidalgo botched what appeared to be a relatively simple opportunity to fall on the ball at the edge of the six-yard box. When the rolling ball got past Hidalgo, Redei capitalized again with an open-net goal in the 49th minute.

Bailey and Carreiro each drew a foul in the box during the final 10 minutes of regulation, and they both converted their penalty kicks in the 84th and 89th minutes, respectively, to push the lead to 6-0. Bailey’s score was her first of the tournament and the third in her U-17 WNT career. Carreiro’s goal was her first U-17 international score as she was also making her international debut.

The final goal came about 20 seconds into stoppage time as Hedge launched a dipping shot from distance that Hidalgo scrambled back to her line to deflect. The Guatemala goalkeeper batted the ball up in the air and behind her, but the assistant referee ruled that the ball had fully crossed the line and Hedge was awarded her first goal of the tournament and second of her U-17 career.

Guatemala’s best scoring chance came early on in the match when Aisha Solòrzano hustled to create the first shot of the game – and the first of the tournament against the U.S. defense -- in just the second minute. Otto broke up the attack, which gave up a Guatemala corner kick, and it was a totally dominant effort for the U.S. from that point on.

(September 25, 2013) – U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team head coach B.J. Snow has named the roster for the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship to be held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from Oct. 30-Nov. 9. The Final Draw for the eight-team tournament will be held in early October.

The U.S. team will have one more event before departing for qualifying as Snow will bring the roster together for a camp in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. from Oct. 13-19. With CONCACAF member Costa Rica hosting the 2014 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, there will be just two berths up for grabs at the qualifying tournament instead of the usual three, meaning only both finalists will earn tickets to the tournament for the youngest age group in which FIFA holds a world championship for women’s soccer. The 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will run from March 15-April 5 in four Costa Rican cities.

Snow named his squad after an eight-day training camp in Lakewood Ranch but still has one spot remaining on the 20-player roster. Several of the top goalkeepers in the U-17 player pool are currently coping with injuries, and Snow will name a second goalkeeper to the roster once it is determined who will be healthy and fit for the qualifying tournament.

“We have worked very hard since January to navigate through the selection process and identify a group of individuals to represent our country for World Cup qualifying,” said Snow. “At the U-17 level, our job is to identify players across the nation who have the qualities to help us achieve our short term goals of qualifying for the World Cup and who also have the potential to move through our National Team system, with the ultimate goal of playing for our first team one day. We feel that this group of players is a great representation of the future of U.S. Soccer.”

Snow, who became the first full-time head coach for this age group last January, will be coaching in his first qualifying tournament and has chosen a roster that features many of the most talented high school-aged players in the country. Leading the way in a dynamic group of attackers are forwards Mallory Pugh and Madison Haley, who have combined to score 10 international goals this year.

The USA’s skillful midfield features a pair of Southern Californians in Marley Canales and Anika Rodriguez, as well as New Jersey native Taylor Racioppi. Snow’s squad has several talented attacking outside backs as well as tough center-backs in Natalie Jacobs and Zoe Morse. The lone goalkeeper named to the squad so far is Lauren Rood from Camas, Wash.

“When identifying players for the group we wanted to find technically proficient players with mobility and the mentality to compete on both sides of the ball,” said Snow. “We also wanted to find players who are versatile, both in the positions that they play and in the variety with which they attack. Each field player selected to this team has the ability to play multiple positions on the field. We feel that this will help our players adjust to the tactical situations we have been teaching as well as help assist them in their long term development.”

The cut-off date to be eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is players born on or after Jan. 1, 1997. Twelve of the players on the roster were born in 1997, but Snow also included five players born in 1998 and two born in 1999.

“At this level of our National Team system, our job serves a dual purpose,” said Snow. “We will always need to adhere to the standards and commitment of the National Team success that preceded us. At the same time we need to invest in the future of U.S. Soccer. We have players on this team that come from three different birth years, and all of them were chosen because they have proven over time that they have the capability to compete at the U-17 level regardless of their age. The experience that they gain at this level will only help them in their future endeavors within our National Team system.”

The tournament will feature the USA, Canada, Mexico, host Jamaica, Central American qualifiers El Salvador and Guatemala, and two more Caribbean nations to be determined. The draw for the tournament will be held in early October.

The qualifying competition will follow the same format as in past years, with two-four team groups producing two semifinalists each. There will be no margin for error for any of the teams as only the two finalists will qualify for the U-17 Women’s World Cup, joining CONCACAF member and host Costa Rica.

Forwards Mallory Pugh (eight goals in all competitions) and Madison Haley (four goals) lead the USA in scoring this year. The Americans have compiled a record of 4-1-2 in international matches this year. The U.S. team will play one intra-squad scrimmage during the camp, on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m.

(August 30, 2013) - The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team won its second consecutive game by a wide margin against England, winning 5-0 as five different players scored. The USA defeated the England 6-0 on Aug. 25.

As in the first match, the USA went ahead early in the game, this time through forward Kelcie Hedge in the 10th minute. Forward Mallory Pugh got the assist as she crossed from the left across the face of the goal and Hedge finished by pushing the ball back into the lower left corner.

Forward Madison Haley made it 2-0 in the 25th minute after receiving a pass from Taylor Otto at the top of the penalty area. She spun toward goal and stuck her right-footed shot into the right side of the net.

Pugh got her third goal in two games on a long, weaving run through four defenders before slotting the ball with her right foot into the lower right corner. The 37th minute goal made it 3-0 and effectively put the game away as the USA would out-shoot England 9-3 for the match. Pugh leads the USA in scoring this year with seven goals in all matches, including five in international games.
