(2011) - Seattle Pacific midfielder Taylor Sawyer has been selected the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Year. She anchored the SPU defense that shutout 11 opponents and surrendered just 13 goals, an average of 0.65 per game.

Also winning special awards were Western Oregon midfielder Lindsay Bauman, Seattle Pacific midfielder Riley Dopps and Saint Martin’s forward Ashley Richardson. Bauman, who led Western Oregon in scoring with 10 points (3 goals, 4 assists) was voted the GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year.

Dopps, who scored five goals including three game-winners, and Richardson who led the Saints with six points (2 goals, 2 assists) shared the GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year award.

Three players – Jenkins, Bauman and Seattle Pacific forward Megan Lindsay - were unanimous selections. Six players, including Western Washington defender Alicia Patten who was named to the first team for the third consecutive year, were repeat selections.

Lindsay and Seattle Pacific forward Kellie Zakrzewski were selected to the first team last year, while Jenkins, Sawyer, and Montana State Billings forward Jaucelyn Richter were first team selections in 2009.

(2009) - Six WPFC Alumnae were honored, when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Far West Region squad was announced Monday.

SPU senior Jocelyn Charette (Lakewood, Wash./Curtis HS) was joined on the first team by defender Taylor Sawyer (Gig Harbor, Wash./North Mason HS), who was one of only two freshmen among the 24 Far West region all-stars.

Charette, a forward, amassed 15 goals and seven assists for the Falcons and was named the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the year.

Sawyer anchored a defense that surrendered 0.51 goals per game. She was sidelined four games due to an injury and the Falcons definitely missed her. SPU yielded six goals in the 17 games Sawyer played while allowing five during the four games she was absent.

SPU won the GNAC title with a 9-2-1 league mark. The Falcons finished with a 16-3-2 overall record after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Chico State, which won the penalty kick tiebreaker 4-3 after a scoreless regulation and overtime.

Irving, who also was a second-team choice last year, had eight assists, tying a school career record that had stood for 25 years with a four-year total of 26. She also scored three goals, all game winners.
